Strawberries for Mother’s Day or until September? This could be reality also in Degerby, because Elina Kontti and Rasmus Nordström have set up two cultivation tunnels on the farm of Bökars. In the tunnel there are strawberry plants in 50 meter rows. They are regularly watered and fertilized, and as the blooming begins specific bumble-bees are moved in to take care of the pollination.
- Bumble-bees are well suited also for the outdoor cultivations because they don’t move far distances, Elina says. She has also set up a straw cottage for bumble-bees by the strawberry fields.
This year Elina has about 800 m2 strawberry plantations in tunnels and 4 hectares on the fields in Degerby and Porkkala. They are sold during summer at Bökars (Degerbyntie 408), by Four seasons fish in Siuntio and at Haije’s market by Porkkalantie in Kirkkonummi.
